AI & Co-design

in public libraries

An online directory of open-source AI education modules to support public libraries to run their own AI literacy programs. Learn more about the research, process, resources and white papers of the study.

EXPLORE RESEARCH

As we enter an era of increased AI technology in our society, libraries have tremendous potential for nurturing AI literacy. Building on the role of public libraries as facilitators of digital literacy, the goal of this study is to explore how library-based AI literacy programs can serve underserved youth communities. The two main components of our program are 1) Module 1—Understanding core concepts of AI, and 2) Module 2—Envisioning AI for local industries.

With these two modules, we hope youth not only learn core AI concepts, but also get more actively engaged with their local civic issues as AI co-designers.

GOAL OF research

  • Understand how AI generation works

  • Work on hands-on activity on AI-generated art with DALL-E 2

  • Discussing ethical issues of classification: Misinformation, Deepfake

Core AI Knowledge: Generation

VIEW RESOURCE

  • Learn elements of AI & understand how classification works

  • Work on hands-on activity of building classifier

  • Discussing ethical issues of classification: AI bias

Core AI Knowledge: Classification

Module 1: Core AI concepts

Our education materials will include hands-on design activities that position participants as active learners and co-designers in shaping future AI technologies. At the end of Module 1, students will develop their own AI prototypes using crafting materials and AI education platforms such as Google AI.

Module 2: AI in society

In Module 2, the participants will envision and co-design AI systems for local industries. This process will help them develop a foundation to prepare for potential future work environments.

  • Get introduced to local industry, its jobs and it’s issues

  • Utilize AI knowledge to envision AI systems that tackles the current industry problems
